"Life in the office" - chapter 5
CLERK: Grand Resort Hotel. Good morning. How may I help you?
JANE: Good morning. I am calling to find out if you have a room available for four nights starting next Wednesday.
CLERK: Let me see? I can see that we have one double room available at that time.
JANE: Can you tell me something about your hotel? I am calling on behalf of my boss who is coming to Chicago on business.
CLERK: Certainly. What would you like to know?
JANE: Everything.
CLERK: Very well. We are one of the most respectable hotels in Chicago. We have rooms that suit every possible need and taste. We have single rooms, double rooms with two single beds, double rooms with double beds and apartments, each with its own living room and a private Jacuzzi.
JANE: Do you have internet connection?
CLERK: Of course Mme. We have a free wireless connection for all our guests within our premises.
JANE: What other facilities do you have?
CLERK: We have a bar that serves drinks all around the clock. Our gourmet restaurant serves homemade food and our chef is a well known two times champion of the Five Stars Competition. We also have an Italian restaurant known all over Chicago for its marvelous spaghetti carbonara. Freshly baked biscuits and cakes are served at our “Planet café”, which also serves a fine choice of freshly brewed coffee. Oh! I forgot to mention our wine cellar. It’s a must go for all those who can appreciate a glass of good wine.
JANE: That is absolutely lovely.
CLERK: We also have our own swimming pool with sauna and Jacuzzi, a hairdresser and a beauty parlor. And for those who prefer to read a newspaper we offer comfortable armchairs in our spacious lounge.
JANE: Wonderful. Now, can I ask you one more question?
CLERK: Of course Mme.
JANE: I must have called every hotel in Chicago but you are the only one that has a room available for that time. How is this possible?
CLERK: Oh! Yes. The Surgeons’ Convention. We had a cancellation five minutes ago. I guess you are just a lucky person. If you called twenty minutes later, we wouldn’t have that room. Should I make the reservation?
JANE: Yes, please. The names are Robert Brown and Alice Hopkins. So, that is a double room with a double bed.
CLERK: No. This is a double room with a king size bed. The bed is much bigger than a double bed. It is also more comfortable. That will be room 657 with a splendid view of Chicago. Your boss arrives on Wednesday and leaves on Saturday. That will be four nights.
JANE: Yes. That is correct.
CLERK: One more thing I forgot to mention. Our complimentary breakfast can be ordered to the room or served at the Gourmet restaurant every morning from 6 am to 10 am.
JANE: Do you serve vegetarian food?
CLERK: I am sure we can meet that need as well.
JANE: Very well.
CLERK: I have just made a reservation for you then. What time will your boss arrive?
JANE: He’s got a flight from Boston to Chicago at 9 am, so he should be there at about 10:30.
CLERK: Should I arrange a free pickup from the airport?
JANE: Absolutely.
CLERK: Consider it done.
JANE: Thank you.
